- Book Your Test!
The Basic Metabolic Panel is one of the most informative and commonly ordered blood tests available — measuring kidney function, blood sugar, and electrolyte balance in a single draw. Seven key markers. One appointment. Results delivered privately to your portal.
Whether you're monitoring a chronic condition, starting a new health protocol, or simply want to know where you stand, the BMP gives you a clear, actionable snapshot of how your body is functioning at a foundational level. Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, BUN, Creatinine with eGFR, Calcium, and Glucose — the markers your doctor checks when they need answers fast. Now available without a referral, collected at your home by a registered phlebotomist and processed at Mayo Clinic Laboratories.
What is a Basic Metabolic Panel? And When Do You Actually Need One
If your doctor has ever ordered a "BMP" or you've seen it listed on a requisition form, you may have wondered what it actually tells you. The Basic Metabolic Panel is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests in medicine — and for good reason. It packs a significant amount of clinical information into a single draw.
What the Basic Metabolic Panel Measures
The Basic Metabolic Panel measures seven key markers that together give a broad snapshot of how your body is functioning at a foundational level:
Potassium — An essential electrolyte that regulates heart rhythm, muscle contraction, and nerve signaling. Both high and low potassium can be dangerous, with symptoms ranging from muscle weakness and cramping to serious cardiac arrhythmias.
Sodium — The primary electrolyte controlling fluid balance in the body. Abnormal sodium levels can indicate dehydration, kidney dysfunction, adrenal issues, or problems with fluid regulation.
Chloride — Works alongside sodium and bicarbonate to maintain the body's acid-base balance. Chloride abnormalities often accompany sodium or kidney issues.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) — A waste product produced when your body breaks down protein. Elevated BUN can signal reduced kidney function, dehydration, or high protein intake.
Creatinine with eGFR — Creatinine is another waste product filtered by the kidneys. The estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) is calculated from creatinine and provides a direct estimate of how well your kidneys are filtering waste. This is one of the most important markers for kidney health monitoring.
Calcium, Total — Most people associate calcium with bone health, but calcium in the blood plays critical roles in nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and hormone secretion. Abnormal calcium levels can point to parathyroid disorders, vitamin D deficiency, or in some cases malignancy.
Glucose, Random — Blood sugar at the time of your draw. While a fasting glucose is more precise for diabetes screening, random glucose still provides meaningful context, particularly if elevated.
Who Should Get a Basic Metabolic Panel?
The BMP is appropriate for almost anyone wanting a foundational health baseline, but it's particularly valuable if you:
Are monitoring kidney function due to high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of kidney disease. Are on medications that affect electrolytes, such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or certain heart medications. Have symptoms of electrolyte imbalance including fatigue, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or excessive thirst. Want to establish a baseline before starting a new diet, fitness program, or supplement regimen. Are following up on a previously abnormal result.
What the BMP Doesn't Tell You
It's worth knowing what this panel doesn't cover. The Basic Metabolic Panel does not include a complete blood count, liver enzymes, lipid levels, thyroid function, or inflammatory markers. If you want a more complete picture of metabolic health including liver function, consider the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, which expands on the BMP with additional liver markers and protein levels.
A Note on Potassium Stability
At AvoVita, our samples are shipped via FedEx to Mayo Clinic Laboratories in the United States. Potassium has a 48-hour stability window, which means this panel must be collected on a Wednesday morning to ensure specimens arrive within the stability window. In the rare event of a FedEx delay, the Potassium result may be cancelled — however all other markers in the panel will still be processed and reported, and you will not be charged for any cancelled test.
How to Order
