MELISA® Testing

MELISA®: The Gold Standard in Metal Hypersensitivity Testing

Are you experiencing unexplained chronic inflammation, fatigue, or skin reactions following a dental or orthopedic procedure? Traditional "patch tests" often fail to identify deep-tissue sensitivities to metals used in modern medicine. MELISA® is a scientifically validated blood test that identifies Type IV delayed-type hypersensitivity to over 40 different metals.

At AvoVita Wellness, we provide private, specialized access to MELISA® diagnostics. By measuring how your white blood cells (lymphocytes) react to specific metal ions, we provide the objective data needed to identify the biological root of your symptoms.

Understanding the MELISA® Advantage

Unlike standard allergy tests that look for immediate reactions, the MELISA® test monitors the "memory" of your immune system. This is critical for patients with permanent implants, as metal ions are constantly released into the bloodstream, potentially triggering a systemic immune response.

Common Metals Screened

We offer comprehensive panels tailored to your specific clinical needs:

  • Dental Panels: Screening for Mercury, Silver, Tin, Copper, and Gold (Amalgam/Crown components).
  • Orthopedic Panels: Testing for Titanium, Nickel, Cobalt, and Chromium (Joint replacement/Hardware materials).
  • Environmental Panels: Assessment of Cadmium, Lead, and Aluminum exposure.

Why Choose MELISA®?

  • Higher Accuracy: More sensitive and specific than traditional skin patch testing for internal sensitivities.
  • Non-Invasive: A single blood draw replaces days of wearing uncomfortable skin patches.
  • Pre-Surgical Screening: Identify potential sensitivities before a permanent implant or dental restoration is placed.

4. Important Logistical Notice (The "CBC" Protocol)

CRITICAL STABILITY NOTE: > Like our CBC testing, the MELISA® test requires live, viable white blood cells. Because of this, the specimen is extremely time-sensitive.

Scheduling: Collections must be pre-arranged for Monday or Tuesday mornings only to ensure the lab receives the sample before the weekend.

Shipping Risks: Due to the 48-hour stability window, there is a risk of specimen "timeout" if FedEx experiences a delay.

Refund Policy: In the event of a courier delay, the test fee is waived for a re-draw, but the $85 Home Collection Fee is strictly non-refundable.

Understanding Metal Hypersensitivity: The Hidden Immune Trigger

While many are familiar with immediate allergies (like a rash from a nickel watchband), Metal Hypersensitivity is often a "silent" systemic issue. Unlike a standard allergy, this is a Type IV Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity, where your immune system’s T-lymphocytes treat metal ions as foreign invaders, triggering a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation.

Because metal ions from dental work, orthopedic implants, or environmental exposure circulate through the entire body, the symptoms are rarely localized to the site of the metal itself.

Common Symptoms of Systemic Metal Sensitivity

If you have metal implants (fillings, crowns, joint replacements, or surgical clips) and experience these "unexplained" symptoms, your immune system may be reacting:

  • Chronic Fatigue & Brain Fog: A constant "heavy" feeling or inability to focus.
  • Joint & Muscle Pain: General achiness that doesn't respond to typical physical therapy.
  • Skin Alterations: Eczema, dermatitis, or unexplained rashes far from the implant site.
  • Neurological Issues: Headaches, migraines, or tingling sensations.
  • Immune Dysregulation: Feeling "over-activated" or developing new sensitivities to foods and chemicals.

The Long-Term Chronic Health Effects

Left unaddressed, a constant immune reaction to a permanent metal implant can lead to more significant health challenges:

  • Autoimmune Activation: Chronic stimulation of T-cells can eventually cause the immune system to lose "self-tolerance," potentially triggering or worsening autoimmune conditions.
  • Implant Failure: In orthopedic cases, metal sensitivity can lead to localized bone loss (osteolysis) or chronic inflammation around a joint replacement, necessitating revision surgery.
  • Systemic Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is a known driver of cardiovascular stress and metabolic dysfunction.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): Many patients diagnosed with CFS or Fibromyalgia find that a metal sensitivity was an overlooked "root cause" of their mitochondrial stress.

Why Traditional Patch Testing Often Fails

The skin and the internal immune system react differently. A Patch Test only measures the reaction of the skin’s immune cells. However, metal ions from a dental crown or hip replacement interact with the bloodstream and deep tissues.

The MELISA® (Memory Lymphocyte Immuno-Stimulation Assay) is the only clinically validated blood test that measures how your live white blood cells actually react when exposed to specific metal ions in a laboratory setting. This provides a definitive "Yes/No" answer to whether your immune system is in a state of high-alert against the metals in your body.

Who Should Consider MELISA® Testing?

  1. Pre-Surgical Patients: Ensure you aren't sensitive to titanium or cobalt-chrome before they are permanently implanted.
  2. Dental Patients: Evaluating the safety of existing amalgams or planning for biocompatible ceramic implants.
  3. Chronic Illness Warriors: Those seeking a "root cause" for inflammation that has not responded to diet or lifestyle changes.

Everything You Need to Know About Private Blood Testing

No we are not connected with provincial health or any other organizations, this is 100% private testing. No requisition is needed (with the exception of cancer screening and prenatal genetic tests), you pay for the tests you want and the PDF results are securely emailed to you. You can download them and do with them as you please.

Different tests have different turnaround times, and we generally tell people to expect a result window of 3-10 days, depending on when your blood draw is completed. We ship specimens on Wednesdays, and so a blood draw on a Tuesday would result much faster than a blood draw on a Thursday which would have to wait 6 days before shipping.

No we are 100% private, anyone can access our tests you do not require provincial health coverage or even Canadian citizenship.

Our third party home services provider is familiar with and comfortable with collections on children. We leave it to the discretion of the parent, and our third party provider if a draw on a child will be acceptable.

Each test has its own price, which can be found by clicking the book now link on our site. We do not offer multi test discounts, the price of each test remains the same regardless of the number of test purchased. You can pick and choose whichever tests you like to meet your needs.
